Wendy Peia Oakes is currently a doctoral student in Special Education with a focus in Emotional and Behavioral Disorders at Arizona State University. During her thirteen-year career as a special education teacher, she has taught students with emotional disabilities in a self-contained setting as well as students with a variety of disabilities in elementary resource and inclusion programs. Her research interests are in the areas of early interventions in reading, teacher learning, and teacher knowledge as it pertains to teaching reading to students who present behavior challenges and reading difficulties. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from the University of Maryland and a Master in Education degree in Education Leadership from Northern Arizona University. Her experience in the classroom has inspired a desire to work collaboratively with teachers so that every child may be a successful reader.
